Obliterated?? Thats a bit much, dont you think? Considering that loeb broke the previous record by 1min:30secs . The vw probably cost ten times as much as the peugeot.
Keep in mind though that the only reason Loeb's time was that much more than the previous was because it was the first year the entire road had been paved. Before that, it was like 30% gravel.
So...an electric vehicle can climb a road faster than petrol based vehicles...what else is new?
Now...can we get back to REAL alternatives to petrol and set these wheeled iPads that will increase the electric bills (energy usually generated by burning fossil fuels) aside?!
Who here is anxious to find out what BMW Hydrogen racers can do at Le Mans 2020?
I think hydrogen is a dead end street. Once electric becomes plentiful then why bother burning any type of fuel at all? Yes, like all here, I’m a gearhead and love to aggressively burn gas through pistons but the lay people don’t get it....
I think we need to take into account Romain Dumas' experience at the Peak, which is pretty substantial. By contrast, Loeb had never been there before. Does that make for almost 17 seconds of difference? Probably not. But it definitely plays a part.
Anyways, fair play to VW. Amazing achievement on their part. If only electric cars were actually the future.
Hmm Dumas expirience against Loebs brilliance, i don't think there is much in it, five year more modern tyres could be worth a couple of seconds i reckon.
VW's PR on this was outstanding. They downplayed expectations that they would only be contest the Electric record; while having a vehicle evolved from the amazing 919 Hybrid Evo, which was designed and built to beat the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, which was completely capable of demolishing the over-all record; without any PR fallout if something went amiss. And wa-lah not only did they beat the over-all Pikes Peak record, but beat it a full 16 seconds faster, and broke the 8 minute threshold that was considered impossible. WELL DONE VW; Congratulations!

it's been said time and time again, the road didn't really get faster through the asphalt because it got much more narrower.
