Honestly, I preferred the GTI with the limited slip diff. I don’t go to the track much and the GTI came alive on the backroads, which is important to me since that’s the type of roads around where I live.
Had the chance to drive the Mk7 GTI and Mk7.5 R back to back on track a few years ago. While the R is properly, seriously, blisteringly quick – and the Mk7.5 updates made it feel properly planted and sorted when you're pushing it on a track – the numbness was what definitely got to me. It's almost like the thing is too good.
The GTI certainly felt slow by comparison (not much wouldn't!) but it felt far more fun to me. It moved around more and communicated a lot more back to you than the R ever did. The Golf R is objectively the better (and much, much faster) car, no doubt, but the GTI is what feels far more fun if feedback is what you want. Plus, on the street, the GTI is arguably all you need anyway.
Nice review. I think that the MK7 is possibly the best golf, everything’s gone a bit downhill since. The GTI and R versions of the MK7 really are brilliant, I was lucky enough to drive a GTi TCR for a few weeks, and I honestly haven’t had that much fun for ages.

Subaru speed, Audi refinement…. AND expensive German car repair bills!
Germans are usually far more reliable than their French, British, and Italian ruvals
Exactly why I own Japanese cars

Definitely cool af, although I prefer the Brabus b45
I don’t know what that is, but I assume it’s a tuned Mercedes AMG that we definitely don’t get here lol.
458 bhp a45 amg, the sound makes me rock hard.
