  • The journalists are complaining about nothing. Drum brakes are cheaper, have better handbrakes (like 100 times better), and have excellent foot brakes. The only problem is they lose efficiency after a few stabs of the brake (which is only relevant on a track)

  • VW do it for their electric cars and that’s a very smart idea as electric cars hardly use their brakes and they will be recouping the energy back into the battery. With their smaller cars it’s cheaper and it’s better to have drum roll brakes as the handbrakes are a soooo much better

  • For any normal person they are more than sufficient. In certain applications you would prefer drums. Rear of a light car they are fine. 80% of the braking is done up front hence discs.

If you are doing track days you want discs. Reason is because the drums will not dissipate heat as well as discs and will end up failing when hot. There are other reasons but that's the main.

Drums are not a problem. Picky journalists are.

  • Some journalists do the majority of there testing on track, on B roads or even outside of the city. They do get a bit carried away. However for ease of replacement and for effectiveness In emergency situations, I think they should be moving do discs soon

  • Well some people might these cars and modify them maybe for track days or straight line speed . If you have a brain you'd also think about the brakes and now you either leave the drum brakes or you convert them

Drum brakes do tend to wear out faster than discs brakes and disc bakes can also dispose frictional heat better than drum brakes
