  • Don Yenko ordered Camaros from Chevrolet, ripped out the 396 and shoved in a 427, a 3.73 rear end, and some other stuff. It was intended to race in the NHRA/IHRA. The problem was that they cars were modified by Yenko so Chevy couldn’t uphold the warranty and the car was made for the Super Stock class so it couldn’t compete due to it being modified. The solution was the COPO Camaro. COPO stands for Central Office Production Order. Pretty much you call Chevrolet, tell them what you want, and they build it. So you could get a base model with a 427, and it would be under warranty and be able to race in the intended class, due to it not being “modified”. Since Chevy built it, it was stock.
