Not normal for any car, but not sure with minis. Would count out engine relation as well. Does it do it in every gear or just 1st?

Sounds more like a transmission problem of some sort then. I would say other drivetrain bits could be going but since it’s only in one gear, I would say it’s definitely in your transmission.
