  • Great write up. I have owned a Tissot PRC 200 since 2011, wear it every day and it has been completely faultless. I think I paid about £200 for it, and as you say it is a great everyday timepiece.

  • It is a beautiful watch, and your article does it justice. You’ll find that almost all Swiss watches of reputable brands for under $1000 have quartz movements. For an automatic, as a general rule you can double the price. A $600 quartz watch might cost $1200 for a comparable model mechanical.

And ownership costs will vary also. A quartz watch might run for 3 to 6 years on the same $15 battery, whereas an automatic, if you use all the chronograph features in a regular basis, will require regular maintenance and cleaning every 5 to 7 years. This could set you back $450 or much more for high end watches.

In my humble opinion, if you choose a mechanical watch, you should also go for a transparent back so you can enjoy viewing the inner workings. And the selection of a watch is to please YOURSELF…if other people like it, so much the better.

  • I picked up a Tissot Visodate recently, not the usual watch type I go for but it fit the budget I’d been given and ticked many boxes so I gave it a whirl. For the £200 I paid it was an absolute bargain, it looks like it cost £1000+

  • I think Tissot is an underrated brand. I don't see a significant way they are inferior to Rolex apart from brand recognition- not enough to warrant the 10x (or more) higher price tags that generally adorn Rolex watches.

And the point of a watch is, in my opinion, not to impress others or get respect from others- it is to impress yourself. If you look at your wrist and see something you like, you've made a good choice.
