  • Jan, great reviews of the Spider-Man movie and the Aubi Dhubi F1 race. That’s the problem with films with endless prequels and sequels these days… it’s impossible to remember all the details from earlier parts that are important in the current part.

But on to the final F1 race in Aubi Dhubi. As a true journalist, your description of the race, especially the last 5 laps, is totally accurate and probably the best summary I’ve read. You have purposely stayed away from any controversial opinion, so I’ll add some.

There already are 5 or 6 major posts out there on this subject, and the numerous comments are all over the map: Max deserved to win and he did, Lewis deserved to win and he didn’t, the officials made the correct calls, the officials made the wrong calls, the officials made the right call but at the wrong time (an oxymoron), there should have been a red flag and a standing start for the last lap… the different opinions are endless.

I am of the opinion that Lewis was robbed. The officials could have decided that all or none of the lapped cars overtake the Safety Car, by which time the race would have ended under yellow and Lewis would have won. In fact, the officials did decide that lapped cars COULD NOT overtake the SC, but quickly changed their minds in the interests of a “racing finish”.

The officials cherry picked by allowing the 3,4 or 5 lapped cars that separated Max and Lewis to overtake the Safety Car, with the result that the two drivers were suddenly neck and neck, but with Max on fresher tires. And we all know what happened.

I disagree that manipulating the rules to provide a racing finish is the best decision. In this case, a racing finish was not possible under correct interpretation of the rules, and Sir Lewis would now have 8 Championships under his belt.

    • David,

I cannot argue with your logic, but it would have been a boring end to a boring race if it had finished under caution.

What about if the race had resumed with one lap to go, but without allowing any lapped cars to pass the safety car? Max...

    • I agree that it would have been a boring conclusion to finish under yellow, but there were plenty of boring races this year. There’s nothing in the rule book that says such a significant race has to be exciting.

      Anyway, even though I was...
