Everything Technical

  • I have 2 questions with this. First, does anyone have a detailed explanation of how these V fins get around the rule banning a hole? Because Craig's explanation is very detailed, but when I imagine the meat slicer analogy going through the nose I still see holes all-over the place.

Second, it appears the teams have been trying to get air away from the underside and towards the top to increase downforce. As I understand it, that's how the s duct works. Less air underneath means lower pressure which means downforce. The red bull nose hole seems to do the direct opposite. It channels air which would otherwise be directed over or to the side of the nose, through it, to the underside of the car.

Unless....this hole lines up with the s duct intake on the RB, which means the air ends up in there and makes the s duct more effective?

    • According to bernouli's equation the faster your fluid is moving the less static pressure you have so accelerating the air under the car means lower pressure therefore it gets pushed down by the higher pressure on top of the car. The S duct...

    • what V fins are you referring too?

  • Thanks for the insight, Craig! Always a pleasure reading your take on technical developments.

  • I would imagine most have looked at this as an option, since Lotus used it on their nose, and the rules in this area aren't new.

What surprises me is that they aren't all using it. It takes that solid blunt surface which only creates an obstruction to airflow and turns it into something which guides air under and to the floor, which they appear to be desperate to make happen at all costs.

I wouldn't be surprised if most teams have one of these in their models being tested digitally, then 1 or 2 teams have one tested on track before they leave Barcelona.

  • Hey Craig, your posts are great, really detailed and give an extra dimension of understanding. I wondered if you planned to post about Mercedes shark fin? It has a parting in the uppermost edge and Kravitz thinks this is a vent, I'd love some clarification
