  • Conceptually I love the idea however I have an e-class estate and with the rear seats folded the thing is huge and has a nicely carpeted interior. Sleeping inside the car is luxury (and wind/rain proof) compared with camping on the roof!

If there are only two of you then just sleep inside.

  • As long as one is camping where there are no giraffes to eat one's breakfast, I think this is awesome!

  • Now, I understand when East German holidaymakers could build a tent on the roof of their precious Trabant to sleep in on their holidays to Romania (watch Go Trabbi Go: www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-svIUg-cUk ), but when you can afford a brand new LandRover Defender, why would you take it up a mountain and sleep on the roof? You're a wealthy individual. You might have one of those big tents that fold out from the roof and make a clamping pod, at the worst, or just drive back to the hotel after your hike, have a gourmet meal and sleep in a proper bed. I've camped in a similatis way from a small hatchback, using a Carannex tent that hung over the open hatch, and later I camped out of a Trabant using a food-up fisherman's camp-bed/tent (which was a brilliant method), but if I was well off, the last thing I would do is take my valuable, expensive LandRover product, go up a mountain and sleep on its roof in a tiny tent!
