  • Leyland was hated for good reason...pure shit

  • Not a bad once over lightly. I would have included the Moke as this was a big point of difference over the usual Holden, Ford and Chrysler battles. The story goes that P76 was rushed to market and also suffered from production engineering issues as Leyland weren't big car manufacturers that could call on parts and expertise of the family around the Globe. BMCA had done a superb job with developing Mini, 1100/1300 and 1800 for the Australian conditions.

A couple of good offspring were the 1500 Nomad and Marina Coupe TC.

What most cars that didn't fit the inline engine and rear wheel drive format, suffered from being bagged by the non dealership workshops.

The know all mechanics who couldn't read a service manual caused a lot of the anti towards anything from Britain or Europe. That included Hillman Imp, Fiat 850 and anything French.

The demise of Leyland Australia was as much to do with the Japanese brands arriving with greater reliability and market positioning not possible from the collapsing BLMC empire.

  • Have only seen two Leyland p76 v8 cars in the UK at a rover cars show in the West Midlands. They look huge here but I can understand the build quality issues as everything produce here was the same. Good idea's but either built to budget or built between strikes. Land Rover although under new owners are still more unreliable than likes of Audi, Volkswagen, Kia Toyota etc.

  • I owned a P76 V8 and loved it. My wife couldn't drive it, she couldn't work out where the corners were, so I sold it and bought a tiny car. Tiny car, big mistake. OK to buy the tiny car, but I should have kept the P76 as well. What an awesome car for the money - I bought it for $900.
