This morning while browsing Cars.com for used cars I cannot afford I came across a listing that made me laugh. I was looking for the absolute cheapest Lotus for sale on American shores with the hope that I'd stumble across a post that read, "Free Lotus to Auto Journalist named Chris." I sadly found no such post so I switched gears to find the most expensive "Lotus" for sale in America. To my surprise, I found the ultra rare Hennessey Venom GT supercar for sale.

The only part of this car that's really Lotus is the Vin. The Hennessey Venom GT or the "Lotus" for sale on Cars.com uses the Lotus Elise as a base car using it's VIN for registration purposes. It's incredibly expensive to get a totally new car approved for road use to receive it's own VIN. In an effort to make the Venom GT a more affordable supercar project Hennessy used the VIN from Elise's and simply made his cars modified examples of the little Britsh sports car.

This engine produces a healthy 1,244 horsepower and 1,155 lb·ft of torque.

Except, Hennessey's definition of modifications might be a little different from our own. To start, the tiny Toyota 4-cylinder is replaced by a twin turbo 7.0 liter V8. This engine produces a healthy 1,244 horsepower and 1,155 lb·ft of torque. This hugely powerful LSX engine is paired to a Ricardo 6-speed manual transmission which was also used in the Ford GT.

With a club weight of one 2,700lbs, the Venom GT is capable of some mind-bending performance. In 2013 the Venom GT set a Guinness World Record for the fastest accelerating production car from 0-186mph. over several runs, it took an average time of only 13.63 seconds. It's also the unofficial record holder of the fastest production car. In 2014 the Venom GT rocketed down the 3.22-mile straight at Florida's Kennedy Space Center reaching a top speed of 270.49 mph. However, this speed was only reached going one way and the Venom GT doesn't reach the production number specifications it is an unofficial record.

The Venom GT is our modern-day Shelby Cobra. A sensible British sports car crammed with a hugely powerful American V8. Clearly, this isn't a normal Elise for sale on Cars.com. So the only question is, whose in for a group buy?
