$14 well spent: Maisto's AMG GT hits above its price tag
It's no secret that every Fall pallets upon pallets of 1:18 scale Maisto models arrive at Costco, Sam's Club, and BJ's discounted to the ridiculously low price of $14. This silver Mercedes-Benz AMG GT was part of the seasonal batch a couple years ago. At $14 a pop, your expectations need to be low. However, this AMG GT is going to surprise you with how much shelf presence it actually has!
The car's panel gaps all the way around are pleasantly square. The hood opens as well as both doors, and the rear spoiler can pop up. The front wheels steer and all four corners sit on springs for an active working suspension. Both headlamps and tail lights are realistically detailed without a mounting post in sight. Unfortunately the grilles are all sealed shut with black plastic, but you have to respect the price tag. Thick but glossy silver paint has collected a bit around the obvious casting marks on the body. The parking sensors cast into the bumpers are a nice detail, but end up looking like overkill. All well within the jurisdiction of a budget model.
I've often considered upgrading to an AMG GT model from a more upscale brand, but for the price, this one is pretty damn good! It would have to be a crazy good deal for a highly detailed car to get me to trade up. Sometimes a Maisto just gets the job done.
