1911 Franklin D Race Car

106 years of history, finished in the fall 1910 to race across the desert from Los Angeles to Phoenix with Ralph C. Hamlin behind the wheel. This car took 2nd place in its first race in 1910 and has remained unrestored since then.

  • It is labeled 1911, and everyone agrees. So, where is the logic in that, when it raced in 1910? I looked it up, everyone agrees that it's a 1911, the Gilmore, Pebble beach concours 2012, even Hemmings. Am I the only one curious about it racing before it was technically produced, in that quaint way we have of calling a car by the year of manufacture... ? Or was the "anything made after June can be the next year model" rule in effect in 1910, just 2 years after the model T assembly lines started cranking out automobile mass manufacturing as we know it?
