Porsche unveiled the successor to the 356 – the original 911 – at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show. Numerous key differences between it and its predecessor, not least the free-revving six-cylinder engine. Ferry Porsche was pleased to have created a car that was “finally big enough to carry a set of golf clubs”. As Peugeot had already starting using three-digit model numbers with a zero in the middle, Porsche had to abandon its original idea to call it the 901. It thus became the now-legendary 911.
