1970 Twister Special Ford Ranchero Found!

Two Ranchero GT Twisters were built but have been MIA....until now.

You may have heard about Ford’s “Twister Special,” a regional promotion out of the Kansas City district in support of “Total Performance Day” at Kansas City International Raceway. Ninety-six Grabber Orange 1970 Mustang Mach Is and 90 Vermilion 1970 Torino Cobras were built for the promotion.

But few are aware that there also were two Ranchero GT Twister Specials. None were known to exist….until now.

Wes Eisenschenk’s Lost Muscle Cars touched on these two elusive vehicles. Per the Marti Report, we knew they were both Vermilion with black vinyl bench, J-code 429 (aka “429 Cobra Jet with ram air”), the Drag Pack with 3.91 gears (making a CJ a Super Cobra Jet), C6 automatic, color-keyed racing mirrors, and several other options. Of course, being Twister Specials, both Rancheros received unique Twister decals on the rear fenders and custom, black longitudinal stripes that mimicked the Laser stripe.

These two Rancheros have been MIA for years, with no sighting of them in maybe 45 years. However, an enthusiast by the name of Dustin Harriman just found one of these elusive vehicles. As he relates in Facebook:

"After almost 50 years of hiding, here she is! One of only 2 1970 Ranchero GT 429 SCJ Twister Specials! Both cars have been lost to the world until Jon and I found this one hiding in a little town in Kansas. She’s rough but priceless! There are no known pics of the Twister Ranchero until these pics! This is the real deal – no BS!

"In 1970 Ford built 96 Twister Mustangs, 90 Twister Torinos, and just 2 (yep, that's right, 2) Twister Rancheros and they were both Super Cobra Jet 429 Drag Pack cars.

"There is a book out on this car called Lost Muscle Cars written by Wes Eisenschenk. With the release of the book, it gave me a VIN number, and I located the car! I want to give special thanks to my wife Elizabeth for putting up with my car addiction, and a special thanks to Jonathan Wayne Worthington for the hours of research on this car.

"I have many high-end cars and I also have a 1 of 90 Twister Torino that will look good sitting next to my Twister Ranchero. Car will be at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals for an official unveiling in November 17-18, 2018."
