1979 Porsche 928 - The 36,000 Mile Time Capsule
This 928 has lived a long life in Colorado and is looking for the next caretaker.
When you hear the word Porsche you often think rear-engine, air-cooled and an iconic shape. Front-engine models are often forgotten when compared against the 911. Back in 1979, one Coloradan looked past Porsche’s iconic 911 and saw the beauty of what was to be the successor, the 928.
This 928 has the 5-speed dogleg transmission. Not only is this amazing Porsche completely original down to the paint, absolutely everything on this example is in working condition including the rear sun visors and original analog clock.
This car is believed to be one of 9 in Metallic Silver 928's Porsche built in 1979.
This Porsche 928 was sold new in Denver, Colorado in 1979. A young couple bought the vehicle, and the wife was the one driving the car. She didn’t enjoy driving manual and within a month the vehicle returned to the dealership. Weeks later the vehicle was given to a salesman as a company car. The salesman kept the car in immaculate condition, and only drove about 30,000 miles during his 35 years of ownership. The salesman kept the vehicle stored throughout his ownership along with every record of the vehicle from late 1979 until 2014.
This 1979 model has the early taillights and Factory Option 16" wheels.
In 2014, the Porsche changed hands and was sold to a gentleman who first fell in love with the chassis at the 1976 Toronto Auto Show. The second owner worked for GM, but the technology and design behind the 928 drew him away from the American domestics and towards the German Grand Tourer.
This Porsche was always a competitor, first entered in the 1984 Concours d’Elegance here in Denver. Most recently the vehicle was entered in the 33rd annual Colorado Concours d’Elegance in which it took first place overall back in 2016. This classic unmodified 928 is a testament to the build quality and longevity of Porsche.
Original floormats, the analog clock and 5 speed dogleg all look great together.
Special options from the dealer when new include the 16” wheels, metallic paint, a Blaupunkt stereo and the ventilated leather seats. This vehicle also includes all owners manuals, the blaupunkt radio manual and the original spare key. The second owner has recently retired from GM and needs room in his garage to fit a new 8th generation Corvette, if he’d had the space he wouldn’t have even considered selling this time capsule.
Based on research done by the original owner, this is one of only 9 Porsche 928’s built in Silver Metallic in 1979. This is truly a rare vehicle and an excellent example of the craftmanship Porsche put into chassis throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s.
