2018 F1 cars vs 1996 F1 cars: The ultimate nostalgic face-off

It's a battle of V6 hybrids against screaming natural aspiration

2y ago

What was the best year for Formula 1? In terms of the cars filling up the grid, it's hard not to pick the screaming V8s, V10s and V12s of the '90s and early '00s. But how would those cars compare to today's V6 hybrids?

Well, this video should answer that question, with a grid of 1996 cars going up against the cars of today around the cathedral of speed that is Monza.

Although the 1996 field definitely sound better with their shrieking naturally-aspirated engines, the sheer straight-line speed and cornering grip of the current crop of cars shines through after a couple of laps. Even Damon Hill's FW18 can't hold back the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton, despite getting one hell of a start.

  • Surely 2004 or 2005 would be a closer match with the ultimate evolution of the 3.0 V10 era?
