2018 is likely Fernando Alonso's last in Formula 1
Fernando Alonso's future has been speculated to absolute death. More keyboard strokes have been made in an attempt to figure out the Spaniard's motorsport future than just about any other topic. Thanks to a rather interesting and cryptic tweet on the official IndyCar Twitter account hints that the speculation will come to an end tomorrow.
This countdown in conjunction with both parties being involved would lead any reasonable human being to think both Alonso and IndyCar have a big announcement on the way. Throw in McLaren for good measure given Alonso's connection to them and their not so secret desire to race in IndyCar.
It is no secret that Alonso has big plans for his motorsport career. He has already captured two legs of the coveted "Triple Crown" in LeMans and Monaco. That leaves the Indy 500 as the only jewel left to win. Going with a full out assault on the IndyCar season would give Alonso valuable knowledge of the car, tracks, and competitors that would only further his Indy 500 cause. McLaren has hinted at a partnership with Andretti Autosport and would be the likley landing spot for Alonso (along with Scott Dixon)
While nothing has been made official we are less than 24 hours away from a major motorsports announcement. All signs are pointing to 2018 being Alonso's last in Formula 1. While it is sad to see a driver of his caliber leave, F1's loss is IndyCar's gain.
