How Does the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Handle The Added Power?

More Natural Power For The Purists:

The MX-5 has always been the go-to drivers ride for the purists among us. Having a naturally aspirated engine, rear-wheel drive, low center of gravity and an excellent 6-speed manual transmission makes it ideal for everyone looking to have a fun time on the road. The biggest change for 2019 would be a power boost. The 2.0-liter I-4 now has a 7,500-rpm redline, 700 rpm higher than before and generates 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque which can be paired to a standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic transmission. I personally love this little power bump, it gives the MX-5 just a little more juice which I've always wanted.

Zippy Looks For a Zippy Ride:

The exterior still encompasses that fun micro sports car design, with high fenders, a sloping hood, and a smiling front fascia, while LED lights give the MX-5 a modern, high-end feel. The rear has a very sculpted look which focuses on a circular design with wide body panels giving it a somewhat muscular look. All and all, I really love this iteration of the MX-5 it's the perfect combination of cute yet aggressive.

The Convertible You Can Actually Afford:

If you need yet another reason to love the famous Mazda MX-5, it has a starting price of just $25,730 for the sport version which is the entry-level trim. It still includes everything we've come to love about the MX-5 over the years. But if you want to add a little luxury such as heated leather seats and a few more features like navigation and a Bose sound system, you can opt for the fully loaded Grand Touring trim, which has a starting price of just over 30k. You really can't find another sports car of this caliber at this price point.


Fun Interior Design Meets Quality Materials:

Slide down into your seat and you'll be greeting by body color door panels, circular air vents, a cue ball like shifter, rounded air vent controls and real metal door handles. Mazda has always been good at making a quality interior and the MX-5 is no exception. I'm always surprised by the quality and craftsmanship in the MX-5 at this price point.

2019 MX-5 - A Phenomenal Update:

The MX-5 puts joy in driving again. From the moment you're sitting snug in the seat to the moment you're shifting from 3rd to 4th it's just a blast to drive. The added power and higher redline make for an even more exciting experience. It's just a little quicker off-the-line and passing on the expressway is a bit easier than before. Just because it has a little extra power, doesn't mean it doesn't still drive like a good old fashion MX-5 though. It's just as ready to tackle the curves and hills as ever.

  • The new HCCI is great tech, saw the engine bay of a 2019 RF recently and it has pulled towards the “flush bay” look, with every single system obvious and open to work on - i bet mechanics and DIY’s will LOVE... LOVE this car. With some internals to reach for the power of the AP2 (200-250hp) and ITB’s paired w the right headers and exhaust (if there’s room for improvement there)., this might be one of those cars that become timeless. Without the weight of the turbo or some flappy paddlebox to ruin the soul, the ND miata is just great.

    • yeah the engine bays are so nicely tucked, great to see care for the enthusiast from companies like mazda and nissan again! and man oh man, the RF is expensive, but the bodylines of that hardtop have me drooling!
