As a week of racing draws to a close in Mexico, so another famous road race gets underway in Italy. The Mille Miglia, which translates as 1000 miles, usually takes place in May but with Italy in the grip of the coronavirus pandemic staging it at that time would have been foolish. The virus hasn't gone away but we're all learning to live with it. With the correct precautions risks are reduced and some events are going ahead.

The field is limited to 400 cars this year. As is usual for the main event only cars whose models took part in at least one of the twenty-four editions of the 1000 Miglia from 1927 to 1957 are eligible. While traditionally the race starts and finishes in the town of Brescia, the 1000 mile loop around the country varies from year to year.

Today's route took teams along the shores of Lake Garda, through Villafranca di Verona, Mantova, Ferrara and Ravenna to the day's finish at Cervia. Friday's racing will finish in Rome and on Saturday teams will drive from Rome, through Siena to Parma (Italy's capital of culture for 2020). The final day takes in Castell’Arquato and Bergamo before finishing back in Brescia for a socially distanced party!

    • Really great news amongst all the crap that's happening now. Unfortunately, State of Victoria (Australia) which is Custodian of Targa Florio is in Stage 4 lockdown. So, Targa Florio got cancelled. Thank you very much to our Premier Dan "Imbecile" Andrews and collection of other imbecile called Government. And , of course incompetent Health Department!

      • I feel your pain, not much happening in the UK either thanks to rising infection rates. The Italian Targa Floria tribute race went ahead in Sicily last weekend and was open to Ferrari's of any age. Italians are very passionate about these...

      • Looks good too, great to see and hear all the cars. Not as good as being there but loving watching it anyway.

    • Had a Abarth 750 with the block stamped Mille Miglia, incredibly free revving ! and not the normal camshaft that I was used to!?

    • Thank you for the heads up! It's always nice to watch those historical cars drive.

      • The live feed is a bit limited, it appears to just be in Brescia. Covering the whole route wouldn't be practical but it would be quite easy to live stream a few on-board cameras.

    • Musing: there's got to be a way to get this run as an Italian Rally Championship stage much like the Florio. Heck, why not sack a French round and just combo-run the Mille and the Florio as the Italy round of the WRC? At least it will open the door for the Rally-GT class, which should make for a spiritual successor to the old races.

      • Now that would be entertaining!

      • Especially because it's easy to implement, too. The Florio's got the infrastructure, so for the neo-Miglia, upsize everything. BOOM! Rally Italia that combines the best of both worlds.

Regularity races are educational and quite fun,...
