2021 Car of the year awards

As 2021 comes to an end let's look back at the best of the automotive industry.

This past year has been rough on the industry with the pandemic slowing production down on all new cars and tightening government restrictions threatening to collapse the industry entirely it has been stressful for all of us. However there have been some incredible cars made this year, and they must be celebrated.

Cheap Car Of The Year- Hyundai Veloster N

At just $32,500 you can get a fast, nimble, fun and good looking hot hatch. With a brilliant 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder making 275hp and 260 lb-ft of torque the N has plenty of get up and go and you sure will have fun going as it's sent through a glorious 6 speed manual transmission. All good hot hatches have to be able too handle well as they are supposed to be front wheel drive sports cars and well the Veloster has no problem in that department with adaptive dampers and a limited slip differential the N is perfect for carving mountain roads. The quirky three door design has been divisive over the years but I have always been a fan of quirky designs and I enjoy it's aggressive mad puppy dog design, as that's how a hot hatch should look. Overall the Veloster's performance, nice raspy soundtrack and fun quirky looks put it ahead of the game.

Truck Line Of The Year- Ram trucks

FCA has done some great things over the past few years especially with the Hellcat platform. The new Ram TRX has had every truck enthusiast drooling ever since it was announced, over 700hp from a 6.2L supercharged V8, and some pretty awesome long travel suspension the TRX is able to handle anything you throw at it. However the TRX isn't the only truck in Ram's lineup turning heads, all of they're trucks have vastly improved over the past few years. They're interior quality is easily best in class, and unlike the competition comes standard with coil spring rear suspension with the option of air ride, this allows for a smoother ride and better towing capacity. Don't forget to mention the legendary Cummins 6.7L turbo-diesel inline 6, which now produces a whopping 1,075 lb-ft of torque! Ram has surpassed GM truck sales and in my opinion at least are making better trucks than Ford at the moment. With the new Lightning hurting Ford's reputation, Ram could soon take the crown of best selling trucks in America.

SUV of the year- Ford Bronco

Now as many of you know I am a Jeep guy through and through, yet this year Ford released the new Bronco and it has exploded in popularity. Not only is it great off-road as any SUV should be, it also works well as a practical family hauler. With wonderful rugged looks and a solid rear axle the Bronco is perfect for any off-road enthusiast. We finally have a solid competitor for the Jeep Wrangler and I'm excited to see what else this SUV resurgence brings.

Performance car of the year- Chevrolet Corvette Z06

The most sophisticated Corvette of all time is bound too smash records with it's glorious 700hp naturally aspirated 5.5L DOHC flat-plane crank V8 that revs to 8,500rpm (I know a lot of words but that would give any middle aged man in a golfing outfit a crisis). The Z06 sounds and looks epic, ready to tackle the Nurburgring and Le Mans. This is not just a Corvette this is a proper super car capable of tackling the best Ferrari and Porsche have to offer. As a car enthusiast you can't not be excited for this!

Brand of the year- Hyundai/Kia/Genesis

Man has it been a long journey for Hyundai, just 15 years ago they where making cars so bad they where better suited for the junkyard than the dealership floor are now competing with the likes of BMW and Mercedes. The release of the sporty N line has been a huge success, they bring affordable top notch performance. With great handling, a nice raspy exhaust note, bright and exciting exteriors and wonderful transmissions they are setting the bar for what a cheap performance car should be. They're crossovers such as the Kia Telluride are making crossovers more exciting with they're beautiful interiors and good looking exteriors. The Kia Stinger is competing well with the BMW 3 Series with it's sporty suspension, looks and a 365hp twin turbo V6. The Genesis line has been a huge story creating these beautiful luxurious saloons that can compete with even the legendary Mercedes S-class. Hyundai has grown into something special and I can see them having an even brighter future.

Car of the year- Alfa Romeo Gulia GTA

The GTA is what an enthusiasts car should be, a blisteringly quick, beautiful and fun car with a gem of an engine. In a time where the world is fighting against cars like this Alfa always finds a way to steal our hearts. This 540hp rear wheel drive M3 fighter, is not only 30hp up from the regular Quadrifoglio but 220lbs lighter. The GTA was built for one purpose and that was going fast!

Well that's it for 2021!

Well it may have been an up and down year for the industry, but there have been some fantastic cars this year and will be plenty in the next. Let me know what car was your favorite in 2021 and what car your looking forward too in 2022. Also I will be writing an automotive razzies (awards for the absolute worst) in the upcoming days.

  • Love the choices on the cars. And yes dodge has come so far with their trucks. They use to be super simple trucks with big power and a little more space than the competitors but now they're really coming up in the world. They just need to fix that terrible hemi tick.

    • Agreed, they have become the Rolls-Royce of trucks as I've heard some say

    • They have, and they use to be behind the rest. My old 71 sweptline still had a model T style straight axle upfront with a straight shaft steering column to where the ford's had twin I beams and rack and pinion and the c10's had independent front....

  • Can’t disagree with any of those choices, all solid

C8 might be my car of the year, just on performance for money ratio alone is it should be with a Corvette

I mean yeah, no manual option is a sting, but the rest is so good you can look past that

Plus the Bronco is great, I wouldn’t say no to a yellow short wheelbase one
