Porsche has added a new entry-level model to the Taycan EV lineup, one that's rear-wheel drive and a lot less expensive. Starting at $81,250, the new Taycan is $10,630 more costly than the all-wheel drive Tesla Model S, but begins a significant amount lower than the Taycan 4S AWD. It's also 215 pounds lighter, and will arrive this spring.
The 2021 Porsche Taycan RWD is powered by a 79.2 kWh battery pack as standard, but has a 93.4 kWh one on tap for some extra cash. The 79.2 kWh allows the EV to produce 402 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque, while 93.4 kWh-equipped models boast 469 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. Despite the configuration, the new Taycan RWD will do 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds on its way to a top speed of 143 mph, according to Porsche.
Both batteries support DC fast charging, and regenerative braking is standard. Charging the batteries from 5-80% takes 22.5 minutes, according to the automaker, but range estimates have yet to be released. The most range from any Taycan model is just 227 miles, a figure that doesn't match up with the Tesla Model S's EPA-estimated 402 miles of range.
Porsche's adaptive dampers are onboard the RWD model, and air suspension is an optional extra. 19-inch Taycan Aero wheels with black anodised brake callipers are also equipped, and the front apron, side sills and rear diffuser in black are the same as those on the more expensive Taycan 4S trim level.
Inside, the 2021 Taycan RWD has a 10.9-inch central infotainment screen and an optional display for the front passenger, partial leather seats as standard, and Apple CarPlay and Apple Music. Additionally, it comes with over-the-air update capability, automatic "Plug and Charge" payment software, three years of Electrify America charging, and a 19.2 kWh onboard charger.
The 2021 Porsche Taycan RWD will cost $81,250 when it goes on sale this March.
