2021 Toyota Mirai Fully Unveiled, To Start Lower Than Expected
The ultra-luxury Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell will start 20% lower than outgoing models and has a range of over 400 miles.
1. Toyota has fully unveiled the second-generation Toyota Mirai, a stylish hydrogen vehicle.
2. It has a more powerful fuel cell component and a near 50/50 weight distribution.
3. The rear-wheel drive sedan will cost 20% lower than outgoing Mirai models and is 2.6 inches lower.
Toyota has fully revealed the 2021 Mirai hydrogen fuel cell, a vehicle of which will have an EPA-beating range of 404 miles. Powered by a smaller fuel cell stack, the next-generation Mirai now produces power more efficiently, and therefore generates more of it. To be specific, the 2021 Mirai's fuel cell setup makes 128 kW compared to the current Mirai's 114 kW.
The all-new Mirai has a single motor layout, with the sole power producer driving the rear wheels. Unfortunately, however, this singular motor only puts out 180 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. This disappointing horsepower figure pushes the Mirai to 62 mph in an equally dull 9.2 seconds, according to Toyota. Either way, Toyota claims that its low center of gravity and near 50/50 weight distribution allows it to feel sporty and agile.
Buyers will mostly care about range and what's on the inside, there's no getting around that, and luckily for them, the Mirai's cabin is loaded with luxurious features, those of which you can read about in this previous article. For a quick background though, leather, an abundance of technology, and style is all packed into the second-generation Mirai's cockpit. EPA estimates say 312 miles is achievable in the 2021 Mirai, however chief engineer Yoshikazu Tanaka says that 404 miles is more plausible.
These range numbers are crucial to the Mirai's success, as it's running off a refueling infrastructure that has yet to be grown significantly. As it stands, hydrogen refueling stations are mostly located in California, Hawaii, and parts of New England. If Toyota can expand the hydrogen refueling network, they might see great success with the all-new Mirai.
2021 Toyota Mirai models will start 20% lower than current, $58,550-beginning models, but no specific numbers have been announced. All-new Mirai models will arrive in December.
