2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 wins German Car of the Year New Energy Category
Conquering house brands, Hyundai's latest qualifies as a finalist for the German Car of the Year award.
OFFENBACH, Germany (October 28, 2021) – In what some may consider a stunning triumph, Hyundai Motor's IONIQ 5 won the 2022 German Car of the Year (GCOTY) award for best vehicle in the "New Energy" category. It now goes on to compete against the winners from the other four classes for the overall GCOTY award to be announced November 25 of this year.
Much like at the North American Car of the Year awards, a panel of 20 international automotive journalists at GCOTY test and evaluate the latest automotive vehicles annually to judge product features, relevance and future viability across different categories. Then the finalists are evaluated for the overall title of German Car of the Year.
The IONIQ 5 is by no means the first EV that Hyundai's produced, but it is the start of a brand refresh led by Chief Creative Officer at Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) Luc Donckerwolke.
In a statement he said, "IONIQ 5 is the start of the new Hyundai era, as it rediscovers our roots by reinterpreting the DNA of the first Hyundai – the Pony – to project our brand into the future."
This is big news for Hyundai considering it was up against Germany's domestic brands' EVs such as the BMW iX and the notorious Mercedes-Benz EQS. Both of which carry a higher entry cost into EV ownership at around $85,000 and $103,000 respectively, while Hyundai's award winning EV comes in at approximately $51,000.
The IONIQ 5 is set to release later this year in the US.
