Teased about nine weeks ago, the 2022 Subaru WRX has revealed itself to the world, packing 271hp, 258 lb-ft of torque, and weird wheel arches.
It's only a modest increase in grunt, sure, but to hear Subaru's marketing say it, that's not the point. After all, this WRX is riding on a new Global Platform chassis that they developed for everything that isn't the BRZ, which Subaru says is more rigid (also thanks to a body-mounted stabilizer bar) and lowers its centre of gravity. Result: "a rally legend for the next generation".
The good news, at least, is that you can still get this with a manual, so you can still go full-on with it. But if you want to be seen as less of a yob, there's a GT trim level that's a first for this lineage.
Shelling out a bit of extra for the GT (shown here in grey) grants you adaptive dampers, suede Recaro front seats with red stitching and a different design of wheel, but retains the new 11.6-inch Apple/Android-ready screen.
You'll have to wait for the 400hp WRX STI version for maximum yob, as well as an official price quote. Also, no hatchback, at least for now, so if you want this Subaru, you better live with it being a three-box sedan.

Hideous
Yeah it’s really ugly
1: I WANT A WRX WAGON AGAIN!!!
2: Why is the only manual alternative a CVT still? You only had 7 YEARS to address that Subaru… Some sort of DCT or a conventional automatic transmission would be way better than a CVT.
A week after the acclaim of the BRZ, Subaru manages to bring us back to reality by disappointing, yet again, with a new WRX. Seriously? What were their product planners thinking? The top spec GT that includes Recaros and active dampers can only be had with the CVT? WTF? If the STi is CVT only then we’ll know they’ve completely lost the plot.
If you ever feel like a failure, remember Subaru could have made the WRX look like this.
(Disclaimer: be that as it may, I actually quite like the new WRX).
