The 8th-gen Volkswagen Golf R has been revealed, and promises more performance thanks to more power, a six-speed manual transmission, and an upgraded AWD system.
The engine is still a 2.0 liter turbo four, but gets 27 more horsepower and 30 more lb-ft of torque than the last Golf R for a total of 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. That's 74 more horsepower than the 2021 GTI. VW claims a top speed of 155 mph and a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.7 seconds for the optional 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The Golf R's 4Motion AWD system has been overhauled and now incorporates a torque-vectoring rear differential, meaning up to 100 percent of engine torque sent to the rear axle can be sent to a single wheel if needed. Additionally, it is lowered 0.8 inch compared with the standard Golf and comes standard with adaptive dampers. The front brakes are larger than before, with two-piston calipers.
Looks-wise, the R takes on a more assertive stance than the GTI but still looks mature and understated inside and out. A 10-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster are standard, along with Nappa leather and stainless-steel pedals.
In the US market, the Gold R will only be sold as a loaded trim level, with the only choices being color (blue, black, and white) and transmission.

Golf with a drift mode....... interesting.
My only issue here is that cheap finance will allow a lot of younger people into a Golf R and you’ll get this hooliganism in the streets. At least with an E63S/M5, the price points is sufficiently high to exclude kids with the people that can afford using them on the track.
I think it’s a mistake and should only be allowed for people with sufficient skill in the right environment which is difficult to police, hence mistake!
You are spot on JP.
Can the car industry wake up and realise not all buyers are 15 year old
Its not bad, but I still hate that shiny plastic screen bezel in the interior
If I wanted to drift I wouldn't buy a AWD hatch, I would get a RWD
I've heard that before
