Going straight to the topic that has been buzzing around since the first prototype was spotted: The powertrain. The new Corvette Z06 is powered by a 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V8 derived from the C8.R race car dubbed the LT6.

The mill produces 670 horsepower at 8,400 rpm with a redline at a screaming 8,600 rpm thanks to a flat-plane crankshaft. Making the LT6 the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine in a production car. To keep this rev-happy engine at optimal temperature, five heat exchangers are installed with redesigned front fascia and sides with larger vents to feed air to them. To provide the Z06 with better vocal range, Chevy brought back the central mounted floating quad exhaust which took engineers two years to develop and fine-tune to make it sound unlike any other Corvette ever built. Coupled with the new engine is a revised eight-speed dual-clutch transmission featuring a shorter final drive capable of launching the Z06 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds.

Power is nothing without handling. The Z06 is 3.6 inches wider than the standard C8 for that in mind. The increased width allowed Chevrolet engineers to fit the new Z06 with 20-inch 275/30 front tires and 21-inch 345/25 tires at the rear. Making them the largest wheels ever used on a production Corvette. Chevy engineers also retuned the suspension specifically for the Z06 and upgraded the standard brakes to six-piston Brembos biting on 14.6-inch rotors on the front and 15-inch rotors on the rear. For those that want more, carbon-ceramic brakes will be available as an option measuring 15.7 inches in front and 15.4 inches at the rear.

For those that want the ultimate Z06, they can select the Z07 Performance Package. The option adds mechanical and aero upgrades like Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 calibrations to the Z06-specific suspension tuning along with super-grippy Michelin Sport Cup 2 R ZR tires specially developed for the new Z06. Also offered for the first time on a Corvette are carbon-fiber wheels that shave 41 pounds of unsprung weight. Aero tweaks come in the form of a larger front splitter with dive planes on the front corners, underbody strakes, and a big wing. Chevy says in this spec, the Z06 can pull 1.22 g on the skidpad and generate 734 pounds of downforce at 186 mph.

The new Z06 will be available as a coupe or convertible and if current events don't throw any more nasty surprises like it already has, production is slated to begin in the summer of 2022. Pricing along with more performance details will be announced closer to its on-sale date.
