Here on DriveTribe all of us drool over the greats of motorsport. The Ford GT40, Audi Quattro, McLaren MP4/4 and Porsche 917 all come to mind when the great race cars are talked about.

You never hear of obscure racing cars though do you? That’s kind of the point otherwise they would be well-known. Thing is though finding that obscure car is your challenge.

The challenge is simple: You have to find a race car that has a combination of relative obscurity in the public eye, success in motorsport, sheer entertainment and a captivating story. A case of it being underrated will have to be made so picking a Ford GT40 is unlikely to get you far. You will also want to justify your answer. Only race cars will qualify; anything with number plates is disqualified. The comment with the most bumps wins. The winner will be decided on the 26th September.

Can you find that hidden gem of a race car?

  • Tyrrell P34. 6 wheeled F1 cars were an interesting concept of the 1970s and early 90s, they had great potential but were never fully developed (Williams had tested an absolutely fantastic one, but it was banned before it could race). The P34 was by far the most successful; being used in 2 seasons (1976 and 1977), and managing one win at the 1976 Swedish GP (with Jody Scheckter at the wheel)

  • Chaparral 2J. Had a Chevy V8 producing loads of power, but also a snowmobile engine powering a large fan sucking the car to the ground. It was so good other teams in the Can Am series it raced in complained and they changed the rules to ban it.

  • The BMW 3.5 CSL. It was so dominant in its time in the ETCC. Surely it deserves to be thought more highly of.

    • Most cars only compete in F1 for one season these days so officially today that sounds like a long time!

    • Mmm but Ig it is quiet forgotten considering Merc dominated F1 in the 60s. Everyone knows the 300 SLR but very few know its predecessors
