Going by the what I hear and see in the media, it seems people in India are going crazy over SUV's. With a little thought into the matter, I've come to the conclusion, that these are the reasons why.
1. Bad Roads.
Most of the cities are filled with bad roads. So buying a car with higher ground clearance to take you through potholes and mud makes sense.
2. Diesel is cheaper than Petrol.
Compact SUVs have diesel variants and most SUVs run entirely on diesel. Lucky for SUV heads, even tractors and farm machinery works on diesel. And because of that the Government will always provide subsidised diesel. Which means, buying a big SUV comes with a profit.
3. Bollywood Fanaticism.
That's the virgin- Salman Khan
Indians have always been crazy about their favourite Bollywood celebrities, especially the most popular ones. And most of them are always seen driven around in SUVs, which makes us believe that that is what people do when they become rich and famous.
4. The subconscious presence of the caste system.
Things that are dormant find ways to come out. Now I would say most Indians would have by now forgotten about the divide created by MANU centuries ago. The same division exists on our streets as subconsciously we know that a bigger car will always be the one to dominate. But the good thing is that on the street, you are not bound to a class by birth. You can always work your way up. Which is always a good thing.
