5. BMW M235i

Pros: BMW luxuries, good performance, one of the cheaper BMWs?

Cons: A bit expensive still, lots of cash for maintenance

Average price: $26,674 USD

4. Honda Civic Si

Pros: VTEC, good fuel economy, great way to learn how to drive a stick

Cons: FWD, which will not work in the winter where I live

Average price: $7,375 USD

3. Ford Mustang GT

Pros: Lots of power, fast, good looking, cheaper than newer variants

Cons: RWD, which will not work in the winter, horrific gas mileage

Average price: $10,587 USD

2. Volkswagen Golf R

Pros: Hatch for good practicality, easy to mod, good performance, AWD

Cons: Used VWs have a tendency to break down

Average price: $14,515 USD

1. Subaru WRX/WRX STI

Pros: Fast, AWD, seats 4, looks and sounds great!

Cons: Gas mileage could be a bit better

Average price: $31,058 USD

  • Im not sure how FWD is a con for driving in winter, usually FWD have the advantage over RWD in the winter actually. Sorry if this sounds mean.

    • Snow + FWD + going up hills in PA = Recipe for catastrophic chaos

    • True, although if you're not going up hills, it handles great in the snow. Just put some chains or snow tires on the front wheels and it'll be good.

  • What about a 2nd or 3rd gen Ford Ranger, a Volvo 240, a Ford Probe, or a Toyota Tacoma?

  • "lots of cash for maintenance"

That kind of makes it a terrible first-choice car.

  • Sports cars are a terrible choice for a first car when you're a new driver. You will end up paying a high insurance premium for a while.

    • That's another downfall that I forgot about... Well, I guess I have to save :P
