Ever since the beginning of the automotive industry, it has always been dominated by men, from designing all the way to building the cars. However, over the past few years women have been joining the industry and they have been making a great impression. Here are the best 5 cars that were designed by women...
Irina Zavatski, Design Manager at Fiat Chrysler Autos has been responsible for this simple, yet beautiful family van.
Irina's father was difficult to convince as he's always wanted her to become a doctor. However, Irina wanted to become a designer so badly that she took her dad on a tour of the Cleveland Institute of Art transportation department to change his mind. She was lucky enough to get an internship in GM and that was that...
Diane Allen has been the exterior Designer at Nissan, and she has been involved in the design process of quite some cars. Recently she has been working on this, the Nissan Titan. To be blunt, it's not the prettiest pickup truck you can buy, but I'm not here to critique the car. She has also worked on the Nissan Rogue and the Infinity QX56.
As a child, Tisha Johnson described herself as always being the 'artist of the class' at her early age. Her career at automotive design started off a bit late though.
Tisha headed to the headquarters in Sweden to get to work on the the Volvo S90.
Winnie Cheung, the person behind the stylish interior of the 2016 Chrysler 200, was a graphic designer and fine arts student at the Art Centre College of Design, in California. She then took transportation classes to qualify as a designer in the automotive industry, at first she thought it was tough but then she realized that she really enjoyed it. She is now the Interior Design Chief at Fiat Chrysler Autos.
Oh yes, I've kept the best for last. In case you didn't know, the Honda/Acura NSX was designed by a woman, Michelle Christensen to be exact. She has been the first ever female exterior designer at Acura. As a child Christensen's father was into hot rods and drag races, and she got into it too. And like all petrolheads who can draw cars, she thought that designing cars is what she wants to do, so she studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She said that designing cars would be the perfect blend of her passion for art and cars.
Christensen had been responsible for Acura ZDX, Acura RDX, Acura RL sedan facelift, Acura RLX sedan and she has been the lead designer of the second generation Honda NSX. People may not like the new NSX because it doesn't feel like a NSX, it lacks the character of the original car. Nonetheless, from a design point of view, it is beautiful, but it isn't the only beautiful thing in the picture above though. 😉
