5 JDM drift cars you could own today

I've been heavily procrastinating whilst scouring the classifieds so you don't have to. All part of the service…

Let's face it – building a drift car is hard work. And, when it comes to choosing the best drift car, there's a lot of choice. So, why not let someone else do it for you? Here's my round up of the top JDM machines up for sale right now…

5. Fresh from the motherland JZX90

JZX chassis are hot property in drifting at the minute – with classic late ‘90s big body styling, plenty of power and enough doors for all your mates to jump in, it’s hard to argue with the logic. This one’s packing a little fettled 1JZ-GTE motor with a couple of good-brand bolt-ons from GReddy, so should be good for 300-350hp. It’s also got coilovers (good), a Tomei two-way diff (very good) and a massive wing (most important) so it’s good to go. It’s currently on a boat from Japan to the UK, lands in September and could be yours for a snip under £8k. Nice.

4. Tidy and low mileage JZX110

If you’re still on the JZX tip but want something a bit newer, then how about this JZX110? As standard, they’re not quite as aggressively-styled as their older brothers, the JZX80/90/100, but this one has been beefed up with a subtle Origin bodykit. It boasts a 1JZ-GTE VVTi motor, a manual box and only 55k miles on the clock! It’s already got coilovers and Work wheels too, along with a pair of bucket seats. In fact, ramp up the power and this would make for a nice sleeper street car – no-one would have a clue what it was!

3. Not one for the purists

Now this really is a ready-made drift car. In fact, going by the stickers on the side I’d say that’s exactly what it’s been used for. Long gone is the 4A-GE motor and in its place sits a Nissan SR20DET. Sacrilege you may think, but if you want to hop in and start drifting with no fuss then this powerplant is ideal – easily tunable and cheap to repair/replace. There’s not much I’d change here – for an AE86 the price is keen too.

2. Turbo Doritos with extra spice

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but FD3S RX7s have shot up in price recently. They’ve almost become too sought after to drift, but if you’ve got deep pockets then this could be the one for you. Sporting a Rocket Bunny bodykit adorned with a whole stack of carbon goodies, there’s certainly plenty to take in on the exterior. Under the bonnet the owner is claiming 380hp of street-ported rotary goodness too. It’s not a drift car currently, but the foundations are there for one heck of a sideway machine with a few tweaks.

1. Workin’ It

If you’re after a bit of a looker then you need look no further than Driftworks’ own Rich Starkey, who’s selling his Driftworks/Work Wheels demo S15. There’s a whole load of cool parts on this car, from the full Origin Stylish bodykit, brand new Work Meister L1s to the one-off HSD big brakes and selection of tuning goodies under the bonnet. The car was once a non-turbo auto, but has been fully converted to Spec R turbo/manual specification. It’s properly gorgeous too.

  • ^ like king Cali said, you never know what the previous owner did to the vehicle. it's better to build it yourself, that way you know everything about your ride
