5 of the best dream commutes as picked by DT staff – tell us yours!

Between you and us, we've quite enjoyed the post-lockdown working world. The DriveTribe team is fairly well spread across the UK, Europe and Australia (hey John Coleman!), so we're not really missing our old Chiswick office. But we have started to think about our ideal lives – where we'd live, where we'd work and – most importantly – how we'd drive into our dream jobs each day.

Let's get stuck in.

Tired of keeping the DriveTribe marketing wheels spinning and the 7am phonecalls from James May, Lucy's decided her dream life would be pulling pints behind the bar in May's pub. At least that way James can just shout downstairs whenever he wants help with TikTok.

Lucy would buy her own hobbity cottage with a thatched roof, and wind her way to work at The Royal Oak in a baby blue Porsche 911 from the 1980s… but one that's been converted to electric power. The roads around May's pub are brilliant (if a bit narrow), and Lucy's buzzing 911 should keep her as entertained as much as it enrages old men on internet forums. Perfect.

Fed up with trying to film car reviews at the side of the road in Surrey ("Oh is that your car?" "Have you stolen it?" "Sorry about Fido, he gets very excited by bald men"), Tim plans to move his family to a gorgeous village in a valley in the Austrian Tyrol. He'll buy a plot of land on the side of a mountain and use it to film low-rent car reviews. His commute, then, will be a series of twisty uphill hairpins and the odd dirt track, ideally with his choices carrying a bit more punch through the scenic silence thanks to a K&N filter. He'll be going full Austrian on a KTM 1290 Super Adventure S, a 1.3-litre adventure motorbike with 160hp.

Given that the Austrian climate isn't always sunshine and cowbells, for rainy days he'll slip behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 RS – a 997.2 generation car. In orange. With black stickers down the side. Heaven.

Rachael Hogg – vineyard work in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider

You know Rachael as the Editor-in-Chief of the good ship FoodTribe – and it's perhaps unsurprising that her dream commute ends up working at a vineyard in Tuscany. Her very own vineyard, in fact. She went so overboard with her description that I'm just going to paste it in.

"In another life, I’m commuting to my vast and beautiful vineyard estate in the heart of Tuscany to work on my latest award-winning vintage of Brunello di Montalcino [that's a wine. Rachael really likes wine, and drinking lots of it].

"Naturally there’s a gorgeous villa on the vineyard where I live, but I’ve got another spot a good 25 miles away where I run my even more successful pasta business, working with all the best and loveliest Italian Nonnas (it’s called ‘Pasta Del Oggo’). I scoot around the vineyard in my Piaggio Ape, and commute along the epic sweeping roads between my two businesses in my Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider."

Can't top that, really.

John Coleman – to the political heartland of Canberra in a Bentley Flying Spur

You could never have guessed, but running many of the behind-the-scenes machines that keep DriveTribe afloat isn't John Coleman's life calling. Nope, our favourite down-under member of staff (okay, the only one) has aspirations of being a federal politician in Canberra. It takes all sorts.

John would settle on a vast estate in rural New South Wales, giving him a two-hour drive to work each way, and the only way to travel is clearly a Bentley Flying Spur, paid for by the taxes of his subordinates. Sorry, constituents.

As well as giving him back massages and getting him to work completely relaxed, the Bentley will also help keep out the litany of spiders and deadly snakes that line the path of his commute.

Tim Fullbrook – to Imola in a Ferrari 250 GT

Italy gets a second mention on our list, this time from Tim on the social team. Not content with being meme-lord extraordinaire, Tim's somehow got a job shaking down racing cars at one of the most beautiful racetracks in the world.

"I'd live in the small hilltop town of Valsalva in Italy," explains Tim. "I'd commute to work each day on the via Stradale Provinciale 610 all the way to Imola."
