We all dream about owning our first supercar. That day can potentially come a lot sooner if you choose to opt for a used supercar. Many people feel that this is a very risky decision. And it is. So here are the top 5 rules for when you buy your first used supercar.
1) CAR COMES FIRST, INSURANCE COMES LATER
A major concern for first time used supercar buyers is whether or not they can afford the insurance. At this point in time, the car is the first priority. You can worry about the insurance later. Deal with problems as they come up. In other words, the less research you do, the more time you save. And everyone can benefit from more time, am I right?
2) TRUST THE OWNER SELLING IT TO YOU
The owner knows what they are talking about! After all, they OWN the car. Why on earth would they lie to someone as willing, excited, and vulnerable as you?
3) LET YOUR EMOTIONS LEAD THE WAY
If you are just so insanely excited to get your first supercar and you see something that is wayyyy too over your budget, let your emotions do the talking. It's that little voice in your head that's whispering *GET IT, GET IT, GET IT!* Why let that little voice down?
4) MORE KILOMETRES MEAN NOTHING
Someone mentioned to me that buying a new Honda Civic makes a lot more sense than purchasing a used Aston Martin. Yes, used cars do have a lot more mileage on them. But there's just something so sleek about owning an Aston Martin. I don't know if it's the majestic purr of the engine or the way that the check engine light is always on (just kidding, kind of...), but this level of beauty is otherworldly. Unless you get a Honda Civic Type R. That's kinda cool too I guess...
5) IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, GREAT!
Life is too short to worry. If everything about the car looks and sounds just a little too good to be true. Then golly, you sure have found yourself in a wonderful situation haven't you? Pat yourself on the back as it will be smooth sailing ahead!
And that's it! What did you think of my list?
OKAY, YOU CAUGHT ME. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DOING ANYTHING LISTED ABOVE.
What a crazy world it would be if we all acted like that! In regards to doing a SERIOUS list in the future, would any of you be interested in some actual tips that I've gained from the V8 Vantage?
Let me know in the poll below.

Fantastic main article image, shame it was not car related, but a great picture nether the less.
Oh, sorry, my mistake, there is a car there, sorry, I missed it first time.
I've studied this pic carefully I think you are mistaken there is no car there
Haha! Hilarious! You actually had me there! Some people DO think like this!
Thank you 😛
We’d all like to think like this, but sense tends to win out! 😜
Having bought quite a few second hand Italian cars ranging from not exotic to slightly more exotic, emotional buying works well, hell who needs to pay the mortgage every month, I'm sure that the bank has plenty of money without adding mine to it.
Haha, yes exactly! 😛
Spot on advice and can I just say that this pretty much sums up the purchase process of my first Italian supercar. Except the insurance part; I shortlisted the cars I liked (a British, a German and an Italian) and did check with my insurance company before purchase because I'm sensible. I then went with the most expensive option.
It worked out alright, I only had to replace a big chunk of the suspension system (bushes all round, springs at the back and likely soon the front springs and, gulp, the electronic shock absorbers) and the dealer reassures me the metallic noise the variators make until the oil pump builds pressure is not a problem if it only lasts a couple of seconds.
Luckily, half the cost of the broken parking sensor was covered by warranty and they did pay to have 2 discs and 4 pads replaced (I paid for the other 2 discs). Oh, and that squeak from the electronic hand break when setting off is not a problem because, according to the dealer, they all do it...
The car looks great on my driveway though and when I get to drive it I always arrive at the garage in style.
LOL oh no! At least you have a great view out your window though! 😅
Thank God for motorbikes is all I'm saying :-D
Great rules, Rebecca, that I followed to get an affordable "F40". Thanks a lot, Rebecca!!! 😎
