The sun's out, which means tops down! Summer time also means it's prime time to buy a convertible. You can of course go for the newest and shiniest metals, but what's the challenge in that? Which means, I am going to tell you - the 5 hairdressers' cars to buy for under £1,000.

And no you can't buy an S2000 for a grand, FYI the cheapest you can get an S2000 for is £5,000, so it's well out of our budget today.

Starting with the cheapest open-top you can buy today - MG TF

MG has always been a bit of a laugh in the car industry. They have the reputation to fall apart within seconds, and they break down a lot. Often the bills that you pay to get them fixed is far more than what's the car is worth. However, this time, I'm bending the rules as this is by far, by far the cheapest car in the bunch, costing you just £400- which leaves you plenty to repair the car.

Not that it needs anymore repairing the MG shown above, this particular MG TF has been taken care of, with service history, taxed and MOTed. It's also a 3-owner car from new, which is not bad considering this example was borne in 2002. This might be overlooked, as journalists back in the days said that the MG offers thrills and excitement nearly as high as the famous MX-5, and that it's compact body and low ride height makes everything seem faster than they actually are, which means your hair-do won't be so easily messed up when you arrive at the salon.

The Most Famous Hairdressers' Car Of Them All - Mazda MX-5

It wouldn't be a complete convertible car list without mentioning the most famous open-top of all time - the Mazda MX-5. There is actually an NA MX-5 on sale currently that is cheaper than this particular NB MX-5, but I decided that the pop-ups on the NA is way too overrated and that the NB MX-5 deserves much more attention. With it's now refreshed and not-so-pop-up headlights in place, this 1.6L example offers wind-in-your-hair experience like no other, with designers mimicking the likes of the early British sports cars - MGB and so on, to make sure that they don't break all the time, and still makes you have fun. The rear-drive chassis on these are super well-sorted, and it leaves plenty of room for upgrades if you so fancy. I even heard that there is even a company named Rocketeer which offers a complete kit including the wiring loom and so on for you to fit a Jaguar V6 engine at home, if that's what you wish.

The aftermarket support on these are also vast, which means you can customise the car in whatever ways you so fancy. Especially when the car is as cheap is this - £600. Not bad for that much fun and this little cash.

How To Look Expensive Without Spending Much - BMW Z3

Drivetribe's very own James May once took one of these to Iran, and it is reported to be one of the worst cars he ever drove. The reason behind - I heard at least - is because of the automatic gearbox that's fitted to that car. The gearing seems too tall for such a low powered car, and the ratios are just plain wrong.

I didn't even thought of the Z3 when I made this very list - it's just not my cup of tea. Then I saw how cheap these things were - this particular example is known to be the cheapest Z3 on sale in the UK to-date, costing only £925. The background check on this car also showed some interesting results too, after it's birth in 1997, this 1.9 example had been exported to other places in the past and had been re-imported back into the UK - why I don't know, but just for reference you're certainly buying something with a colourful history here.

Hard-top goodness for not much money? - Mercedes-Benz SLK200 Kompressor

Being one of the first in the world to offer a metal folding roof, the SLK sure is a future classic. With it's iconic lines and smart-looking body still looking sharp till this day, the SLK is sure to let you enjoy the sunshine in the summer, without risking your neck in case of a rollover.

This particular example looked to be very well taken-cared-of, with new rear tires, alternator, battery, clutch and master cylinder recently serviced. This might be one of the best buy of the day if it is what it's advertised to be. However, as far as I can see, there is only one glaringly obvious feature on the car that is very nineties - the alloys. Why would Mercedes put steelies-lookalike on a car that is supposed to be posh? I mean at least you get some change to put some better wheels on it - with this only costing £990, the SLK is definitely a modern day classic to be had today.

Mid-engined goodness for not much at all - Toyota MR2

When the MR2 was first launched, it never really caught people's attention like it's chief rival - the Mazda MX-5. People expected more from Toyota, having known that the MR2 badge has been put on cars that were way faster and way more capable. There was one particular reason for that though - Toyota intended originally to put the 2ZZ engine from the Celica into this, before the engine was sold to Lotus to put into the Elise, but right after the sell, Lotus kindly asked them not to do so to make sure that it wouldn't steal the sales of the Elise. That's why the MR2 never got the engine it was designed to have. Instead it has a 1ZZ engine with a whopping 138bhp.

The handling on these things are very good though. Compared to the Mazda, people say that the Toyota is more capable because of its mid-engine layout. It is also just as fast as the Mazda back in the days.

Nowadays you can pick one of these up for as little as £999, like this example. It promised to offer hassle-free motoring with not much money to be spent. You can even, if you wish, to put the 2ZZ engine into one of these to make it what it was intended to be. Your choice.

There you go, 5 cars, 5 different ways to becoming a hairdresser.
