6 American cars that are better than you think

American cars haven't always been the best cars in the world but there have been times when they've managed to make better cars than their rivals.

Today, we look at American cars which are actually better than their competition.

Ford Focus RS Mk3

When it was produced, the Mk3 Focus RS was the king of hot hatchbacks. The Mk3 Focus RS was also the first Focus RS to be sold in America. Despite its issues, the Focus RS is powered by a 2.3 litre turbocharged gasoline engine which was able of producing 350bhp and 350lb ft of torque.

The Focus RS was one of the best handling hot hatches when it was on sale, beating out rivals from Volkswagen, Honda and Mercedes. And the Focus RS was affordable too. For the 2018 year, it started at $41,120.

Dodge Viper ACR

The Dodge Viper has always been one of my favourite cars since the original appeared in the early Gran Turismo games on the original PlayStation. Since them, the Viper had matured into a respectable sportscar rivalling the likes of the Corvette, Jaguar F-Type and even some supercars.

Towards the end of its life, Dodge made the Viper ACR which was one of the fastest track cars ever built. Dodge were so confident in it, they took it to the Nurburgring where it set a time of 7 minutes and 1.3 seconds. This beat the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and the Nissan GTR NISMO. That is an impressive time, and that was down to the sheer amount of downforce the car had and it's 8.4 litre V10 producing 645bhp.

Ford F-150

This was an easy choice as it's known all over the world that the Ford F-150 is one of the best trucks you can buy. It out sells its competition from Chevrolet, RAM, NIssan and Toyota partly due to brand loyalty and because of how good the F-150 is. Looking at the trim levels you can get on the F-150, it's simply mind boggling to someone who isn't an American.

The F-150 line up is one of the most diverse I have ever seen. At the bottom, you get your basic work truck, mid-level you get something a bit nicer, then you get the luxury models and then at the top, you get the off road focused Raptor. It's a brilliant line up.

Chrysler Pacifica

The Pacifica is Chrysler's latest attempt at making a minivan and it certainly looks quite good. This is one of the few American cars that should be sold outside of America due to how competent it is. The Pacifica looks great, it's huge on the inside with space for 8 people and their luggage, and a range of decent engines.

This minivan is a genuinely good car and stands up well to things like the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna.

Chevrolet Bolt EV

The Chevrolet Bolt is better than the Tesla Model 3. There I said it. Seriously though, the Bolt is one excellent little EV. Sure, it's not as fancy or gimmick filled as the Model 3 but that's not the point of the Bolt. The Bolt is a good looking, practical car which doesn't make you look like a rich douche. The Bolt also has a 238 mile range, fast charging available too.

Compared to the Tesla, it seems to be a far better value. Yes, it starts at a list price of $37,495 but unlike the Tesla, you can go to a local Chevrolet dealership and buy one right now.

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

Chevrolet builds one of the best mid size trucks on sale today in the form of the Colorado. With the Colorado, you can get an off road package called ZR2. This is basically the uprated, stronger and better version of the Colorado. The ZR2 offers larger shock absorbers, bigger tires, a locking rear differential, and custom bodywork designed for off roading.

The Colorado ZR2 comes with two engines, both of which are quite good. The gasoline version is a 3.6 litre V6 which offers 308bhp and 275lb ft of torque. The diesel engine is a 2.8 litre turbodiesel inline-4 which offers 181bhp and 369lb ft of torque.

What do you think?

I've only selected six good American cars that I like but I want to know which one you would pick. That is, you know of something better? Let us know in the comment section.

  • Should have mentioned the Corvette, supercar looks with 400bhp starting at £42k, crazy value and not as bad to drive they used to be.

  • Two trucks, that don't have to meet any safety standards, so yes, they're cheap. The Ford Focus isn't really an american car is it? It was developed by the german branch of Ford, and the Chevrolet Bolt is really a Daewoo. And the Chrysler Pacifica being based on a FIAT.

So two of the six are trucks, three are not American cars at all. As for the Viper ACR: impressive, that they only squeeze 645 bhp from an 8.4l V10
