Over the years, television shows and films have given us some of the most memorable and coolest cars to ever exist! Some were already cool cars at the time, whilst others were transformed from the ordinary to the legendary. Here’s a list of some of our favourite, cool cars from the big (and small) screen.
GMC Vandura (The A-Team)
If you’re thinking about cars that were perfect for the part, then the ’83 GMC Vandura featured in The A-Team has to be high on that list. It’s a brute of a van and with the red stripe and spoiler combination it quickly became an icon. Over the course of the show, the Vandura was filled with all sorts of equipment, including surveillance recording devices and disguise kits, as well as featuring in the show’s famous stunts, somehow always being in perfect condition by the next episode!
Toyota Supra (The Fast and the Furious)
For a particular generation, nothing is cooler than the original Fast and the Furious movie, featuring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. The film introduced many to serious car mods, including Nitrous Oxide Systems, or NOS. It’s hard to choose between the two lead cars in the original film, with the 1970 Dodge Charger R/T and it’s ridiculously huge supercharger being an awesome sight…but the Toyota Supra that Brian O’Conner drives just about wins out, thanks to it’s huge wing and ’10-second’ performance.
Aston Martin DB5 (James Bond)
When it comes to James Bond and the cars featured throughout the film’s entire history, it’s hard to pick just one cool car. Honourable mentions have to go to the ‘submarine’ Lotus Esprit, the Aston Martin DBS V12 from Casino Royale and the barrel-rolling AMC Hornet. However, there’s a clear winner and it has to be the Aston Martin DB5, which has featured in half a dozen of the films in total. It’s first appearance in Goldfinger (1964) made it an instant classic and it looks even better now than it ever has.
DeLorean DMC-12 (Back to the Future)
No list of cool film cars would be complete without mentioning one of the most recognisable – the time machine from Back to the Future. Whilst the DeLorean DMC-12 was not a great car in it’s own right, a starring role in the trilogy means it goes down in history as one of the most famous cars ever. With it’s gullwing doors and stainless steel body, the DMC-12 was a perfect choice for the film, especially once it was fitted with all the gadgets and hoses, including the flux-capacitor – after all, it’s what makes time travel possible!
‘Kitt’ Pontiac Trans Am (Knight Rider)
James Bond has gadgets in his cars but KITT from Knight Rider surely outdoes them all, by being a supercomputer-on-wheels! The ‘Knight Industries Two Thousand’ was based on a 1982 Pontiac Trans Am but the turbo boost, body armour and artificial intelligence sets this Trans Am apart from any others. The red scanner bar at the front allow KITT to ‘see’ and drive autonomously, which was way ahead of it’s time! The number of gadgets and features that KITT was fitted with is far too much to list here but even just the looks make it cool enough for this list.
Ford Mustang (Bullitt)
The original cool movie car. The 1968 Mustang driven by Steve McQueen in Bullitt has got the looks, performance and presence to make sure it’ll always be considered one of the coolest cars of all time. The car chase scene inspired movies for decades to come and it ensured both the actor and car would be legendary. The actual Mustang used in the main scenes was damaged beyond repair but a second example used during production still exists in a private collection. That cars exact whereabouts is unknown.
EDIT - a commenter pointed out that the original Bullitt Mustang was shown earlier in 2018, so has now come out of hiding! So, you know, maybe just ignore that last line.
Have we missed any cool cars? Or is there an even worse car than the Pacer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments
