A 1976 Porsche 911 Targa Police Car? Yes Please

Interesting might not be the world you want to use for this...

Cars that are unique and special to the eye usually leave a significant mark in the car world. There are many different and engaging stories about the classic cars we all know and love. It could be a Countach that is used as a sled transporter or a 356 A that is completely unrestored yet is still used to this day. Every car and model has a story. Although, many petrol heads might not recognize this captivating story about a very special company and a very special model.

Porsche has always had a big history and special partnership with the Police Force and their cars. Over the decades, Porsche has delivered a mighty 1,000 cars to police forces across the world. They have given various models for many officers, such as 356 models, 911s, and the rarest of them all was the 911 Targa models. In the 1970s, Porsche bestowed the Belgian gendarmerie or police force with a few intricate national police cars. Porsche delivered twenty Porsche 911 2.7 RS Targas to the Belgian police force in 1976. You would expect them to still be here, unsurprisingly, they are only three left in the world. Maybe they should have given the officers some free driving lessons as well... But, they did.

The officers had to be trained specifically to drive these certain cars. Since the 911 2.7 RS Targa models were very narrow bodied, it was much more difficult to handle, which meant it took skill to master these fast cars. Noticeably, it is a Targa model equipped with the Targa top, I know I'm stating the obvious, but I'm stating it for a certain reason. The open-top gave freedom and leeway for the officers, one officer would have their hand on the gear shift while the other police officer would stand up and signal drivers on the road. Imagine getting pulled over by this... I mean, I wouldn't mind at all.

Whilst this was a stunning car to look at, it was even better to drive. This Porsche 911 2.7 RS Targa Police Car was the fastest police car of its time up until 1993. This car was the fastest police car in the world for a tremendous 17 years. Powered by its naturally aspirated 2.7-liter flat-six engine this police car had a total power output of 210 brake horsepower. It might not sound a lot, but back then that type of horsepower was a massive thing, not only that but its power to weight ratio made it even quicker.

What a dream this car is. Especially with all its original quirks and accessories, such as the 1970s blue siren or the original orange hints throughout the car. You were definitely the coolest officer in Europe during this time. Who wouldn't want to be pulled over in this? And this time you couldn't even say "I let you pull me over" to the officer, because they probably caught you before you could even think about pressing the throttle. In this car you would touch the throttle lightly, and you could feel the air-cooled fuel-injected engine increasing its vast power, and before you knew it, you were off and ready to go...

Sadly, none of us will ever see this type of car on the road, there's only 3 originals left in the world. With owners who take care of them and drive them to their limits. These are such rare, simple, humble yet fascinating cars. They are meant to be driven but also meant to be taken care of with immense scrutinizing. The clean lines, the beautiful Targa top, the siren, the raw noise, the simple body shape, the leather steering wheel. This car is perfection. Not only does it have hard-core history, it also has a sense of class to it. These cars deserve someone who is passionate about them. And I think we could all say, that we are so jealous of those Belgian police officers...

  • I would love to get pulled over by that! Florida should replace their crappy Tahoe’s with Porsche 911 Targa 4s’s. That would be amazing and my friends wouldn’t go 120 in a 45!
