A 300MPH production car? Will this ever be possible?
Well, at the current rate of progress in the automotive world, a 300MPH production car is just a stones throw away. However, there reaches a point in speed where we stop the battle with our own engineering capabilities and start a whole new battle with mother nature, perfectly illustrated by this wonderfully weird photo from somewhere deep in the internet...
But apart from a picture of the Green-Giant sweetcorn man fighting a man made of houses, what does the actual battle between automotive engineering and nature entail? Well there are already plenty of examples of this battle unfolding in current production cars. The most obvious example of this is car companies such as McLaren using active areo in order to help the cars cut through the air. This has to be done as at high speeds the resistance of air (Yes air has resistance, its strange but stick with it) becomes so great that it starts to actually slow the cars rate of acceleration. James May perfectly illustrated this point on an episode of TopGear when he said; at 100mph air has a thick texture similar to that of custard, but at 200mph this texture thickens further, into something that is more easily comparable to treacle! Swimming through water is a struggle at times so imagine trying to do 300mph through treacle. The point is it gets very difficult.
However the problems don´t start and finish here. Mother nature also starts to medal with certain elements of the vehicle at high speeds. An example of this can be found in the new Bugatti Chiron. What happens here is quite remarkable and is something that happens in no other production car.
So, from what we have been told our whole lives is that tyres heat up the higher the speed, and thus there is an increase in tyre pressure, meaning that very expensive and bespoke tyres are often created by the giants of Pirelli upon the release of a new hypercar. However, the Chiron opens up a whole new problem, where at speeds over 250MPH (because this thing can do over 270MPH!!) because of the speed of the air passing over the rubber shoes, the tyres begin to cool and they actually begin to drop in pressure...I know...what the hell.
And these are just a couple of the problems that speed freaks run into when trying to develop a new obscenely fast car for the masses. However, at last a company called Hennessey may be about to answer this 300MPH question.
I am of course talking about the same Hennessey that brought us the Venom GT, which is essentially a mutant Lotus which can do a smidgen over 270MPH with a fully manual stick shift gearbox. However, there are rumors circulating about a new creation coming from Hennessey...
The Hennessey Venom F5
Its called the Hennessey Venom F5 and it looks more like a fighter jet than a car to me. Hennessey say the car will have around 1,500BHP and weigh around the 1,300KG mark, thus smashing through the golden ratio of 1BHP per KG of weight. Hennessey also say that it is now a totally new frame, one which doesn't derive from a Lotus, and therefore surely we can expect a new and higher top speed than that of the Venom GT? Unfortunately, in this case, your guess is as good as mine as to the technology incorporated in this new machine, but we should be able to sink our teeth into some real stats by November 1st, the date of SEMA, where Hennessey have chosen to release there new teleportation device.
But how do we know that the new Hennessey will be aiming for that 300MPH mark and not just the title of the fastest production car? Well, because Hennessey themselves released this image very recently...
