- Dodge La Femme.

A car for powerwomen - literally

In the 1950s Dodge had the opinion that women would need their own car. But they still got the big Red Ram V8 from the men's Dodges.

In recent years there have been several cars especially for women, like the Seat Mii by Cosmopolitan or the Fiat Panda Mamy specifically for moms. But special edition cars that have been made to fit the women's taste aren't a new thing and I think neither Seat nor Fiat have gotten the idea really right.

Already in the 1950s Chrysler realized that cars are becoming more and more popular among the female gender. So they decided to give the Dodge Custom Royal Lancer, the top of the range model, a 'La Femme' trim. In 1955 the La Femme was first available, and it had a Sapphire White and Heather Rose paintjob.

This wasn't all though, the interior received some changes as well. It was finished in black, dark red and mainly in pink. You also got an accessery set with your La Femme, it included a facepoweder set, a lipstick and a cigarette case, a comb, a cigarette lighter as well as a couple of purses.

One of these purses fitted directly into a special box on the back of the passenger seat. All of the accessories were made by Chicago brand Evans. In the box on the back of the driver's seat you could store a raincoat, a rain cover and an umbrella.

In 1956 there was a new version of the La Femme, that still was based on the Custom Royal Lancer though. It now had a Misty Orchid and Regal Orchid paint job and a less pink interior.

That didn't mean the interior looked less special, if anything it was even more exquisit and exclusive looking than on the '55 model. Unfortunately you didn't get a purse with the 1956 model, but therefor both seat boxes were now made to store your rain gear.

It's not clear how many La Femmes were sold during the two years of production, but it clearly wasn't a big number, because after 1956 the idea of a Dodge only for women was dropped again.

Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed it and maybe even learned something.

Next week I'll present another special car that's identifiable by its special paintscheme. Please follow me to not miss that!

    • Fair enough. I think it's an interesting idea that certainly shouldn't be forbidden but shouldn't be overdone either.

  • Gendered cars is something I don’t understand, it’s like having gender specific TV remotes.

    • I think it's a nice gag to do. Of course it isn't necessary for a woman to have a different car than a man, but it's nice to see how car makers get creative and think of special features to give to women.
