A Most Inspiring Project Log: Blind Man Builds a Yamaha R1-powered Mini
Ten years ago, an accident took away his sight. Now he's making up for lost time. The YamaMini project begins...
While browsing r/Cars to pick a fight and scream into the echo chamber like a typical denizen of the web, I found this thread showing Simon, a fully-blinded after an accident, starting up a project of swapping a Yamaha R1's engine into a Mini.
While there's little more than beautiful reactions on the Reddit thread, there is a Pistonheads thread from a friend of Simon's showing some progress since the first video, from the engine build to test-fitting the whole thing into the Mini's engine bay. Simon admits that this is the first time he's worked on an R1 motor, but for a neophyte who's hard of seeing, he's done quite well.
So far, his channel has had just two videos, and other than YouTube and the two forum threads, there's not much more information to glean from this. But it's certainly an interesting project to follow, and there are dozens rooting for him to succeed. I may end up trying to give a go at interviewing the uploader, but first, I'll have to talk to the Discord channel to ensure I'm doing this correctly. I shall update the post accordingly by then.
CORRECTION: Thanks to David Ruston for pointing out that Simon is indeed totally blind, and that he has more videos showing his progress. You can it here, as well as a link to the BlindLeadingTheBlind channel.
Welcome to our new Channel, Blind Leading The Blind!! The channel will follow Simon Fox (Foxy) who sadly due to a horrific car accident lost his sight over 10 years ago. Simon always had a life ambition however to do another Mini build, after much pressure from his loving wife Pru and best mates Andy and David the plan was well on its way when we all went and bought a Mini. A few months later Andy and Simon then went on another road trip to get the new beating heart for the Mini, its R1 engine!! So yes, Simon always wanted to build a bike powered Mini - And when I say Simon wants to do the build, he is leading the rest of us on this project.... The Blind man leading his mates who have no idea on what they are doing - Building his dream car. We missed the filming of the start of the project but will from now on be documenting progress regularly. Andy wrote to Mini World a year or so back and they kindly ran an editorial on Simon and have promised to feature the car when finished
