A pristine BMW Z8 once owned by Steve Jobs is coming to auction
The BMW Z8 is one of the most desirable cars ever built, and now this perfect example as owned by the late Apple boss is up for auction
The BMW Z8 was slightly unloved when it was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world in 1999. It was a bit awkward, with its manual gearbox and centred dial set up not to mention that it cost £80,000 in 1999 money (£129k in 2017 money). Even its appearance in a Bond film wasn’t enough to shift cars from dealer lots, with some remaining unsold for an age.
Late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was undeterred by all of this, buying this particular Z8 in October 2000. Jobs owned the car before selling it to its current owner in 2003.
In the hands of its current owner, this Z8 has been driven on a regular basis, resulting in less than 1000 miles a year being covered to get to the 15,200 miles on the clock at the time of sale.
The current owner is actually both the cars second and fourth owner. As he parted with it in 2004, before regretting his decision and promptly convincing the third owner to sell it back to him in early 2006.
With just under 6,000 examples of the Z8 in existence, it has gone down in history as one of the prettiest cars ever to wear the iconic blue and white roundel. Whenever you see one on the street, it’s just one of those cars that’s brimming with design quirks and details that catch your attention.
As you would expect, this Z8 is immaculate and fully maintained. It comes with the full array of dealer-sourced accessories including the optional hardtop, car cover and even the much hated BMW branded Motorola flip phone that could have been a source of inspiration for its first owner in some way possibly?
Being a BMW Z8 the price is what can only be described as serious, having a very famous late first owner goes to make that already serious price into a really serious estimate price of around $300,000 to $400,000. The car will hit auction as part of the RM Sotheby’s ‘New York – Icons’ on 6th December 2017.
