A Rant about modern BMWs.

Another Rant on another company.

I will start this rant by saying one thing. I like BMWs. I've owned/leased/hired tonnes of them. I even have two with me now, an E30 M3 and an F10 M5. I think this shows I really do the like the company. But since then, their cars have gone downhill. Dramatically. Not in any major places, just one that's incredibly noticeable. Styling.

Car reviewers never tend to review cars by their looks, it's all how they feel, and are put together, but seriously, do you want to be driving something even you, the owner doesn't like.

I'll start at the smaller end of the BMW range, with the 1 Series. Now seriously, I'm not sure who thought giving a car such an out of proportioned grille was a good idea. There's nothing about the car that makes it looks remotely correct in any way. Just look at it:

It really Isn't pretty whatsoever, but somehow, it seems to sell well. But wouldn't all of use just love the brilliance of the M140i back. 6 cylinders, Rear wheel drive. What an absolute blast. But this is BMW remember. Don't get your hopes up.

As some of you are probably aware, BMW recently facelifted/updated the X3/X4/M Model:

You will notice the hideous new grille splattered across the front of what was originally a rather understated car. This is now really "In your face". I mean look at it! It's hideous. And the rear lights are worse. Especially one the X3 (On the right). They look like they're initiating a pincer movement to squeeze the entirety of the rear into the boot lid. Did the X3 even need updating?

Moving on, and briskly onto another recently released/updated cars. The 4 Series Gran Coupe. Now normally when buying a car of this nature, you are going for a more stylish alternative to the usual executive class saloon. If you were previously looking at the last generation of 4 Series GC, you'd probably be looking at the Mercedes CLA, VW Arteon and Audi A5. All very attractive cars, especially when compared to this:

There it is. That hideous grille weaving its way into every single model in the current line up. And onto that, what are those door handles? I mean if your going to concealed door handles, at least try. Seriously BMW? Your starting to make Bangle's work look like pieces of fine art!

And this pattern continues. I'm now going to take aim at the 5 Series. Nothing overly wrong with it, but I seriously have an issue with the headlights. They are so bright, they are impossible to drive past, and on most images, they look out of place and frankly hideous:

The lights and grille look out of proportion, and on top of that, is anyone else seeing a cross eyed car? The lights seriously make it look dim-witted and rather unattractive.

And it doesn't stop here. I really do like the design of the 8 Series, but the oversized, tilted kidney grille really does ruin a rather attractive car. Just change the grille slightly, and you'll be close to perfection:

So then, what are your thoughts? Leave them in the comments are answer in the poll if you think I'm correct! Thanks for reading!

  • 100% agree. Their only good looking car, the 2 Series, was recently taken off sale. They're very average all round recently too. Don't get me wrong, I love most Bimmers pre-2010, but things have really taken a turn for the worst recently.

    • It really is. I've tried so hard to like their new models because I adore their older stuff, but they are all just too characterlesss and ugly for me.

  • Yes, but you never said anything about the stunning, perfectly proportioned, current generation 2 series/M2.

  • I think they need to slim down there line up, 20 years ago they had 6 cars, and now they have 23 separate models.
