A report claims that Tesla and Toyota are going to partner up
They have worked together before
Tesla and Toyota are reportedly going to partner up again. This will be to create a platform for a small SUV. This would likely be the platform for Elon Musk’s promised $25,000 car. The partnership would work by Tesla doing software and the majority of the hardware being done by Toyota. It is in an effort to combine the strenghs of each manufacturer; software and electric drivetrains for Tesla and building cars properly and efficently for Toyota.
Toyota has already got an EV platform in the form of a reworked version of TNGA that can carry the batteries. Toyota is also working with Subaru on an electric SUV at the moment so if Tesla were to partner up with Toyota then there is a chance Subaru will be involved too.
Toyota have collaborated before with Tesla on the RAV4 EV in 2012. Toyota only sold 2,600 of them so pulled the plug 2 years later. Toyota used to own Tesla shares but sold them in 2019.
What do I think?
Done right and it could work out very well. You could drive in the area of a Tesla on the road and thanks to Toyota build quality you wouldn’t need your bunker anymore. The only other thing that needs to be done right is spacing them in the market. On Tesla’s the bodies are cery bland and the interior is just one screen. They appeal to the tech fan. Toyota’s don’t. For them it needs to look like a normal car. No ridiculous gadgets nobody asked for and restrained styling that appeals to the everyday man or woman.
Done wrong though and it could be a catastrophe. If Tesla get involved in the hardware beyond the minimum required then run fir the hills. It could also drag Toyota’s build quality down too. If Toyota do the same thing here that they did with the Supra and not bother changin the interior then I imagine the will lose sales from their normal customer. The normal Toyota customer is after something reliable, good quality and good value. Tesla isn’t anywhere near as good at that as Toyota. Really it depends on if it is lead by Tesla or Toyota on the hardware department.
I think there is even a chance this could be a small part of a bigger plan where Toyota prize Tesla off Elon Musk and take it for themselves. Only one problem left though: where does Subaru actually fit into this?
