A Season In Review VIII: Fernando Alonso
Alonso's final season in F1 was a struggle but he did everything he could with what he had
And that was that. The career of a two-time world champion is over, well we think so. The door on a return is not closed but presuming that is Alonso's career done, what a career it has been. Fernando Alonso has done it all. From winning world championships against Michael Schumacher to battling at the back with Minardi and McLaren. 2018 definitely falls under the latter category.
Many would suggest that Alonso's second stint at McLaren has diminished his career, I would argue otherwise. It has proven that he can drag an underperforming car up the grid as far as it will go and sometimes further. Scoring 50 points this season was an admirable achievement.
His best result may well have been his first one as he was opportunistic in taking P5, his best moment wasn't even one that involved racing as Hamilton and Vettel joined him in performing ceremonial doughnuts to the Abu Dhabi crowd.
