Going into the season with Honda engines, uncertainty must have filled the Toro Rosso garage, including a young Frenchman keen to show what he can do. Fortunately for him, the engine held up for the most part and he was able to deliver some performances that gave Red Bull enough confidence to give him a seat for 2019.
The undoubted highlight has to be Bahrain where the car and Gasly worked remarkably well to come home P4. Other strong outings followed at downforce-dependent circuits such as Hungary and Monaco. Failing to score in 16 of the 21 races isn't ideal preparation for him though and he'll need to work on his consistency to deliver at the higher level.
With so much hype surrounding Leclerc's promotion to Ferrari, Gasly has the opportunity to go under the radar a little bit and impress. There were more than a few glimpses this season to show that could happen.
