A sneak peak at AmD Tuning's touring cars
Essex-based performance car specialists, AmD Tuning know a thing or two about getting the most out of a car, so much so that they also compete in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). Team AmD have been in the game since 2009 and currently race with two Honda Civic Type Rs and two Audi S3s.
We were lucky enough get some behind-the-scenes action and come face to face with them:
The four cars were in the process of being re-built after a hard year's graft at the BTCC. The cars are stripped down to the bare minimum in order to clean and refurbish every single nook and cranny. This ensures that they're in ship-shape for the next round of racing, which is in March next year at Donnington Park.
BTCC vehicles adhere to strict regulations which makes it fair across the board and ensures that all cars all producing similar power outputs. Under each of the car's bonnets sits the Swindon TOCA engine - A 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 'fly by wire' throttle control. These engines supply the vast majority of cars in the competition, putting everyone on a level playing field.
The TOCA engine starts life as a 2.0-litre, four cylinder Vauxhall engine and is modified to deliver 350+ horsepower. The beauty of the Swindon TOCA is that the engines can be leased to teams and offers full servicing/warranty packages.
Other rules include the use of AP Racing carbon clutch and the Xtrac 6 speed sequential-shift gearbox/differential, to name but a few.
As per BTCC regs, the cars are lightweight, stripped-out and fitted with roll bars. Only the driver's seat remains in the vehicle, thus keeping weight down to an absolute minimum.
Body panels are bolted to ensure that they're easy to remove and replace as touring cars make contact with each other. This often makes for awesome viewing. Let's be honest, who doesn't love a bit of drama during a race?
Just like other forms of Motorsport, BTCC vehicles come laden with sponsorship stickers. Not only does this help promote partners, it's also a nifty way of receiving extra capital to contribute towards the team's race effort.
AmD's garage offers everything from laser wheel-alignment to engine re-mapping and custom brakes/exhausts - You can find them in Grays, Essex.
