Every year there are those who say the Monaco Grand Prix is boring, predictable and pointless.

Well, that qualifying session, whatever happens on Sunday, was worth the price of the entry ticket on its own.

Red Bull had the hero and the zero. Daniel Ricciardo took pole position with a blisteringly, insanely quick lap, while his team-mate, Max Verstappen, watched it on telly, having pointlessly binned his RB14 during the final practice session.

So that is the grid nicely book-ended by Red Bull, what went on between?
