Ertzaintza, the autonomous police of the Basque region(spain) were investigating a theft of a three-ton generator from a construction site in the Getaria region, when they made a surprising discovery. While searching for the equipment, they stumbled upon 26 stolen rare Group-B cars, homologation specials, and legendary hot hatches from all over the world stuffed in a barn nearby. Most of them were alleged of dubious origin with altered VINs.

According to an arrest report by authorities, the stolen generator was found under a tarp in a forest along with the truck. During the subsequent arrest of a 42-year old male suspect, he was also found in illegal possession of two firearms, a taser, and reportedly around €10,000 ($10,800) of cash.

The police also secured a warrant to search the rest of the farm. Stashed away in the different barn was a drool-worthy array of enthusiast cars from the 80s and 90s the thief had stolen across Europe.

These were pretty desirable and rare cars. The vehicles in question are an eccentric mix of iconic homologation specials and French hot hatches, including Mitsubishi Evos(IV, VI, VI Tommi Mäkinen Edition, VII), Subaru STIs, Ford's Escort RS Cosworth, and Sierra RS Cosworth (one of 500).

A 1-of-502 Mercedes-Benz 190E Evolution II, Renault 5 turbo, BMW M3's (E 30 and E36), mid-engined Renault R5 turbo, and Peugeot 205 GTI. Also rare homologation specials like the Lancia Delta HF Integrale. That's one hell of a collection right there, showing that the criminal had a rather great taste in cars. These were surely going for sale as the chassis number was forged.

Ultimately, officials accused the 42-year-old man of the generator's theft and weapon possession and for changing the VIN numbers. It seems, stolen cars were stashed away for a long period of time, but they are in excellent shape, so at least the thief took great care of them.

Irony of getting caught not because of stolen cars, but because of some construction equipment makes this story one hell of a movie script. The investigation remains public to discover the origin of the rest of the vehicles; let's hope they all get passed to their real owners.
