After a decade of production, Lego finally retired the Volkswagen Camper Van set

One of the longest-produced Lego sets of all time has just reached the end of its life.

The legendary Volkswagen Camper Van set was first released back in 2011, and up until just a few days ago you could still buy it brand new from Lego, giving it one of the longest production runs for a Lego set of all time.

For a decade, it's been a comforting constant to Lego fans everywhere. We thought that no matter what happened, we'd always be able to buy a new Lego Volkswagen Camper Van. It seemed like even in the radioactive wasteland of the apocalypse, a factory in Denmark would still be making new copies of the Volkswagen Camper Van for giant mutant cockroaches to put together. But as it turns out, nothing lasts forever, not even the Volkswagen Camper Van.

RIP Lego set 10220, you hung on for far longer than any of us dreamed possible. You were truly an inspiration. And not only did you somehow manage to stay in production for 10 years, but you paved the way for all the great large-scale Lego car sets we have now. You may no longer be with us, but you will go down in Lego history as a legend. Volkswagen Camper Van is dead, long live Volkswagen Camper Van!

    • Hard to believe, isn't it? I wondered for a long time whether Lego simply forgot it existed and therefore forgot to retire it. Looks like they finally remembered.

  • I have one. It's mostly together still. Aka only in 3 or 4 pieces.
